Athens Athletic Hall of Fame: Ed Allen

April 5th, 2014 | By Marjie No Comments

For more than 40 years, Ed has been an important part of the Athens community.  As a part of the Athens High School football team, he played halfback for legendary coach and former UGA football alumnus Weyman Sellers.  His four-year success on the high school field led him to being selected as All-State and play in the GA High School All-Star game as a senior (1965).  For most of his senior year, the Athens team was ranked first in the state, going all the way to the finals of the state championship.  During that game, Ed had an 86-yard run for a touchdown and was runner-up MVP.

Ed enrolled at UGA, where he continued his football career, playing defensive back his freshman year, then running back for three years for Coach Vince Dooley; he also played on all special teams and lettered for two of those years.  Ed is remembered by his teammates for his toughness and ability to make game-changing plays.  He said he chose UGA because he “wanted to stay in Athens, and loved every bit of my experience as a UGA Bulldog.”  In the 40+ years he’s been a lawyer here in Athens, he has also coached Little League baseball, served as president of the Western Circuit Bar Association, and been on the Board of Governors for the GA State Bar.

Ed counsels young athletes by sharing his own story:  “I wasn’t a very good player when I was younger, but you change as you grow.  Never give up.  You don’t know when you’ll find something you’re really good at.”
