Hit the trails at Hart Farms

February 22nd, 2014 | By Gary No Comments

Road cyclists have it easy. They can jump on their bike and hit lots of great roads for cycling in the Athens area. For mountain bikers, it can be challenging to find places to ride that are simultaneously nearby and not the same trails they ride all the time. Recently I got a hot tip about a great mountain bike facility in Union Point; in fact, people are raving about Hart Farms & Corry House Trails. Only about 40 minutes southeast of Athens, this is a great place for mountain bikers of all levels to spend a day riding trails

“Hart Farms trails are such a great place to experience mountain biking if you are a beginner or advanced rider”
-Brian Molloy, The Hub Bicycles

The Hart Farms & Corry House Trails exist because of the vision and dedication of Jimmy Scott. A 60-something mountain bike enthusiast, Jimmy started about four years ago by leasing Hart Farms, originally a hunting camp. He hand-cut 12.6 miles of single track trails and added some shelters, picnic tables, and even outdoor showers.

The seven trails weave back and forth through a power line easement that splits the property so it is easy to navigate. Jimmy also arranged with a neighboring landowner to add additional 8.8 miles of single track trails on their property called Corry House. About half the trails on these properties are really good technical trails for experienced riders; the others are a little easier for beginners or intermediate riders. To encourage new people to try mountain biking, Jimmy offers free test runs on some of the used bikes that he keeps around. It’s a great way to try out this great sport!

For the past four years, Jimmy has maintained the trails primarily by himself. Recently, the Athens and Gwinnett chapters of the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association (SORBA) have organized work days to help out. Jimmy also does not charge to ride but most people leave a donation anyway.

To get more people out to the Hart Farms & Corry House Trails and to help Jimmy cover the lease and other expenses, SORBA Athens and the Gwinnett Area Trail Riders are organizing a fundraiser called the Heart Breaker Time Trials. Held on February 15 and 16, this will be a fun weekend of mountain biking, with races in several categories on Saturday and a fun Scavenger Ride on Sunday. There will also be prizes, food, live music, and places to camp overnight.
