Local Team Training To Win At Twilight And Beyond

April 5th, 2014 | By Gary No Comments

Each year, the Athens Twilight Criterium attracts cycling teams from across North America and even internationally, but did you know that one of the best teams in the mix is from right here in Athens?

Sponsored by United Healthcare of Georgia, The 706 Project is a local elite cycling team founded seven years ago by local cycling racers and enthusiasts Christian Foster, Brian Molloy, and Eric Murphy. The 706 Project team includes 10 full-time road riders and a few mountain bikers, and the majority of them are based in Athens.

“To be able to showcase their talents in front of the hometown is very exciting for the riders,” says Foster. “The Athens Twilight is a huge national event and one of the top three in the country.”

The team is expected to do well this year. They have been training very hard and added Frank Travieso to the team; he placed third last year. Some support and encouragement from hometown fans could make the difference, though, so make sure you come out on April 25 & 26 to cheer them on!

The Athens Twilight is a focal point because of their roots, but it is one of many races the team will compete in this year. Their full schedule runs from March through September, with between one and four races every week. Twilight is part of the USA Crits Champion Series, which hosts 11 events each year, from Florida to Vancouver, British Columbia. The team also competes in the Southeast Regional Series Omnium and the Georgia Champions Series. You can get more information about all their races at their Facebook page  www.facebook.com/706Project.
