2014-Varsity-Baseball

If you were to describe most high school sports teams or athletes, you would probably use words like dedicated, talented, disciplined, and hard-working.  What you don’t always hear are words like diversified and versatile.  Yet these best describe what makes the Athens Academy varsity baseball team unique.

Sure, they are hard-working, talented, and disciplined, and they have to be dedicated to meet a challenging academic load while playing a sport.  What makes them versatile and diverse is the fact that most of them play at least two and often three sports.  At a time when most young athletes tend to specialize in one sport that they play all year, these guys are playing one sport after another.  Their coach, Casey Kane, sees this has a huge benefit:  “They are used to playing together on the other teams, and the training and skills they develop transfer over to baseball.”  Playing multiple sports has proven to be very beneficial for an athlete and, in this case, a whole team.

Coach Kane explains, “At a school like this, you don’t have any POs (pitchers only players).  Everyone plays a position who pitches, so you have to have a lot of flexibility to fill in those positions.  We train players at several positions so we have the ability to move them around.”  Coach Kane also noted that they have a young team with a lot of sophomores, a few freshman and juniors, and only two seniors.  He trains the JV and varsity teams together and moves a lot of the players around to maximize their performance while developing younger players.

Even though the boys on this team are different ages and have diverse athletic skills and backgrounds, they are consistent and united about one thing:  On this team there are no seniority issues.  “We are all equals here and we work together as a team and everybody pitches in,” says Coach Kane.  In the end, they may not win every game, and most will not continue playing baseball when they go to college, but they will be well-rounded student athletes who can look back with appreciation and pride for the chance to play baseball and many other sports for Athens Academy.
